Nathan Ricketts' will

I found the following abstract from the Ohio county, Indiana Will book:

Youngest son-Ephraim and he as executor
To heirs of my eldest son, William, deceased

Witt: Amos Hastings, James March & Abijah Bennett

Martin. "Ohio County Will Book I." The Hoosier Journal of Ancestry 6 (July 1979): p. 11-13.

I was very exited to find Jane SHEPHERD in this abstract. She is my ancestor and although I knew her maiden name was RICKETTS, I did not know anything about her parents. Now I have her parents names and her siblings.

I was able to find Nathan RICKETTS in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses in Randolph township, Dearborn County, Indiana. He was buried in Carmel or Stone Cemetery in Cass Township, Ohio county, Indiana. His tombstone states that he was born Aug 1765 and died Jan 1847. It also says "Pvt. Col. L. Piper Regt. Revolution War." In the 1840 census, he is listed as a veteran of 81 years which would put his birth at about 1759. I have found his pension file on Footnote.com.

D R Dorrell, Ohio County Cemeteries (Location: Rising Sun, Indiana; Date: 1982;), page 40.

I am working on tracking down the children. There are alot of Ricketts in the Dearborn county, Indiana area and I need to figure out which belongs where.

Ephraim was also buried in Carmel or Stone Cemetery. He died Dec 1890 at 78 years of age. He lived in Randolph township, Ohio county, Indiana (after Ohio county was separated out from Dearborn county). He married Evina.

Robert Bovard family update

Yesterday I posted my findings about the Robert Bovard family. I realized last night that I had forgotten to add a county history to my research. I had found a Robert Bovard family in the book:
History of Dearborn, Ohio and Switzerland Counties, Indiana: From their earliest settlement, containing a history of the counties, their cities, townships, towns, villages, schools, and churches...biographies:...history of the North-west territory, the state of Indiana, and the Indians. 2 volumes. Chicago: Weakley, Harraman & Co., 1885.

The sketch of Robert Bovard is on page 1196:
"ROBERT BOVARD, farmer, Cotton Township, residing upon Section 28, was born in Dearborn County, Ind., May 10, 1825, and received a good common school education. His father, Robert Bovard, was born March 15, 1783; his mother, Margaret McGarvey, in Philadelphia August 16, 1788; his father was a farmer and boatman all his life: he used to keel a boat down the Mississippi River and back again. By his own industry and economy he made considerable property: he died May 12, 1854; Mrs. Bovard December 22, 1861. Their son, Robert, the subject of our sketch, has been a farmer all his life. He married March 4, 1858 to Miss Mariah Heath, who was born in Cotton Township October 22, 1830. By this union two children were born, viz: Lide, February 6, 1864, and Belle, August 18, 1867; is a member of Allensville Lodge No. 81, F. & A. M. and Beherald Chapter; he has officiated as W. M. of his lodge for about ten years, and is an industrious and useful citizen."

Now I have more information about the Bovard family:
Robert BOVARD was born 15 Mar 1783 in County Fermanagh, Ireland. He immigrated in 1803. He died 12 May 1854. Robert married Margaret MCGARVEY. Margaret was born 16 Aug 1788 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died 22 Dec 1861.

You can see the family's migration across the United States from the birth places of their children. Robert was born in Ireland in 1783. At age 20, he immigrated to the U.S. He married Margeret MCGARVEY a few years later. Their two oldest children were born in Philadelphia. The next group of children was born in Ohio (possibly Hamilton county) and the youngest children were all born in Indiana (most likely Dearborn county).

The Father of Isaac C BOVARD

I have been trying to find the father of Isaac C BOVARD for a few months. I had found on message boards and mailing lists as well as online trees that others believe that Robert BOVARD from Ireland was Isaac's father. Since I had no proof, I couldn't make the leap even though there seemed on only be on family of BOVARDs in the Switzerland county, Indiana area.

This weekend I was at ACPL for the Palatines to America conference. I was reminded of Filby's Passenger List Index that is available through Ancestry. I searched for all my German surnames and got no relevant hits, but then I searched for BOVARD. I found an entry for a Robert Bovard that was sourced to an article on Switzerland Naturalizations. While at ACPL, I looked up the article and found:

Gibbs, Ann. "Switzerland County Naturalizations: October 1825-April 1829." The Hoosier Genealogist 22 (June 1982): 42-45.

"Bovard, Robert: 20 October 1828 Court; age 47, b. County of Formaugh; from Londonderry 13 May 1803 to N. Y. City 16 Jun 1803; childred: Mary Ann, Martha Jane, John, Isaac, Eliza Ann, Charlotte, Robert; resident of Dearborn Co.; intent filed."

Not only did I find the county of Robert BOVARD's birth (it should be County Fermanagh, Ireland), but I also found a listing of his children. There is his son Isaac, my ancestor. I still need to get to the original source and see the naturalization record for myself, but I was so excited to find the link between the generations.

I had already found Robert BOVARD in the censuses and today put him and the entire family into my database.
